A new ranking shows where Pilates has built the strongest footholds across America — some of the results are unexpected, with many big cities scoring surprisingly low

Pilates has become one of the defining modalities of the boutique fitness boom, with new studios, concepts and franchises proliferating across the country. While many might associate Pilates with big cities, new research shows an unexpected result.

Appointment-booking platform Acuity Scheduling ranked the 100 largest U.S. cities for Pilates popularity using a mix of studio density, consumer search interest, introductory offers and average reformer class prices.

The analysis used Google Places data to identify studios within city limits, Keywordtool.io data for Pilates-related search demand and a sample of local studios to assess introductory offers and group reformer pricing. Each factor was normalized and weighted to produce an overall score.

Top 20 Most Pilates-Obsessed U.S. Cities

The results challenge some assumptions about where the category is strongest. New York City, despite its enormous boutique fitness market and hundreds of thousands of Pilates-related searches, lands surprisingly far down the list. Los Angeles, arguably one of the cities most closely associated with the modern Pilates boom, doesn’t make the top 20 at all.

Instead, the ranking points to a different group of markets where high studio concentration, consumer demand and accessibility have combined to create particularly robust Pilates ecosystems.

1. Scottsdale, Arizona
Scottsdale led the ranking with 87 Pilates studios, or 35.6 studios per 100,000 residents, the highest concentration in the study. Forty percent of local studios offer introductory deals, while the average drop-in class costs $33.
