Peloton Recalls 2.2 Million Bikes Over Fall and Injury Hazards

Peloton bike recall
Peloton users in the U.S. are advised to stop using any original Peloton Bike purchased from January 2018 through May 2023

A recall has been issued for model PL-01 Peloton bikes due to an issue with the seat post assembly, which can break during use, posing fall and injury hazards.

The recall affects approximately 2.2 million Peloton bikes, which the connected fitness company says applies to the Peloton original Bike sold in the U.S. and does not affect international and North America Bike+ or international Peloton original Bikes.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Peloton consumers are advised to immediately cease using the recalled connected fitness bikes and contact Peloton to request a free seat post and installation instructions.

The safety commission reports Peloton has received 35 reports of the seat post breaking and detaching from the Bike during use, including 13 reports of injuries that include a fractured wrist, lacerations and bruises due to falling from the Bike.

The Peloton recall includes bikes sold from January 2018 through May 2023.

Peloton Buddy reported earlier this week that the Bike was temporarily removed for purchase from Peloton’s website but would return with all bikes sold moving forward having the updated seat post installed.

The connected fitness company said they would email all bike owners to alert them of the recall.

Peloton wrote in its press release:

While this is a U.S. Peloton original Bike issue, we are always focused on our global Member community and the need to ensure they are informed. We are proactively communicating with all Members who own a Peloton Bike – either the original Bike or Bike+. We believe Members should be aware of the U.S. issue, understand if they are affected (or not) by the voluntary recall, and guide them on what steps they should take, if any.”

The latest recall is the connected fitness company’s fourth, according to Pelo Buddy. One of the most serious recalls involved Peloton Tread+, which included reports of adults, children, pets and objects dragged under the rear of the treadmill. Sadly, one accident involving the Tread resulted in the death of a six-year-old.

The company recently agreed to pay a $19 million fine for neglecting to report the safety hazard with its Tread+ in a timely fashion and for distributing recalled treadmills.

The connected fitness giant recently reported poor Q3 results, with a $276 million loss and slumping hardware sales. Peloton says it will refresh its brand and concentrate on its app. It plans to offer a tiered membership structure as a “mobile gateway” to its fitness content, ranging from strength and meditation to outdoor running.
