The wellness industry has settled the question of whether consumers want cold therapy. They do. The bigger question facing operators today is whether they’re prepared to deliver it. As cold plunge becomes a fixture in clubs, recovery studios and wellness facilities, operators are learning that commercial cold therapy comes with operational realities that don’t exist with most other recovery modalities. What began with residential tubs on patios and in garages quickly found its way into fitness clubs and recovery studios as operators respond to growing consumer demand. As a result, many facilities enter into the space with equipment originally designed for home use, only to discover that commercial environments create entirely different demands. As cold therapy moves from wellness trend to permanent infrastructure, operators are discovering that success depends on much more than adding another recovery modality. It requires planning, purpose-built equipment and an operational strategy designed for long-term performance. The Operational Side of Cold Therapy For many operators, the learning curve begins after installation. “The biggest issue is capacity,” Gilliam says. “Smaller chillers designed for one or two people a day in a backyard simply can’t keep pace with dozens of members cycling through every day, and water temperatures can creep up during peak hours.” Behind the scenes, water quality is a constant operational priority as well. “This is especially true if you’ve chosen a cold tub that wasn’t built for commercial use,” Gilliam says. “You’re dealing with body oils, bacteria and debris at a volume a backyard tub was never designed to handle.” That means frequent water testing, balancing water chemistry, cleaning or replacing filters on a set schedule and periodically draining and refilling the tub — not simply topping it off. If any of those steps are skipped, water quality can deteriorate quickly. “Once members notice cloudy or unpleasant water, that’s a hard thing to win back,” Gilliam says. “It’s not complicated work, but it has to happen consistently, and that consistency is where a lot of facilities fall short, particularly with equipment that wasn’t designed to make it easy.” Unlike a red light therapy unit or compression system that simply turns on and off, a cold plunge operates as a continuous water system that requires filtration, sanitation and ongoing monitoring. “The biggest shift is that members now expect cold therapy to just work, the same way they expect a treadmill to turn on or a sauna to be hot. If the water’s too warm, cloudy, or the unit’s down for maintenance, that’s a visible failure to the member — it shows up as a complaint, not a shrug.” Reliability becomes the operational priority: the water needs to stay clean and the temperature needs to hold steady, day in and day out, regardless of how many people use it. “Operators who get this right treat cold therapy as core infrastructure, not a novelty feature, and that mindset shift changes how they train staff, monitor water chemistry, follow maintenance protocols, and choose the right cold tub from the start.” credit: Chilly GOAT Engineering a Commercial Solution Those operational realities ultimately shaped the development of the Chilly GOAT Alpine PRO. One of the most popular configurations is pairing cold plunge directly with sauna. Contrast therapy, alternating between heat and cold, has become a draw and gives facilities a reason to invest in both modalities together. In the end, Gilliam says, “What’s clear is that cold therapy fits naturally into whatever recovery environment a facility is building, as long as the infrastructure is there.”
