On February 5th, 2023, Bárbara Hernández, a Chilean ice swimmer, completed the longest swim ever undertaken by a person in the Southern Ocean to raise awareness about protecting Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. This remarkable journey was made possible with the help of British company dryrobe, which provided Hernández with their dryrobe Advance to keep her warm in the sub-zero temperatures.

Hernández undertook the challenge of swimming more than 1.5 miles in the Southern Ocean at a temperature of around 36°C without a wetsuit, neoprene, or protective grease. Her dryrobe Advance kept her warm through the frigid temperatures and protected her from the elements.

The dryrobe Advance is a versatile piece of outerwear with a waterproof and windproof outer layer combined with a fast-drying, super-warm lining. It’s an all-weather poncho for surfing, swimming, triathlon, camping, outdoor adventures, or days at the beach. The long-sleeved design provides extra warmth when needed, although a short-sleeved option is also available.

As a recent member of Antarctica2020, Hernández called for world leaders to take immediate steps towards conserving the continent and the ocean surrounding it. The impact of climate change is being felt globally, and the preservation of the world’s most vulnerable areas is crucial. Not only are the Southern Ocean and Antarctica essential to the balance of the planet’s ecosystem, but they also contain a wealth of scientific knowledge for researchers. Taking steps to conserve this area has never been more important.
