Smart Toilet Startup Throne Lands $10M to Advance Gut Health Platform

The funding comes as companies and investors race to turn the bathroom into a hotbed for health insights, including early disease detection

Throne Science, the startup behind an AI-powered toilet sensor that tracks gut health, hydration and urinary function, has raised $10 million in Series A funding to expand its team and develop the next generation of its technology.

The round was led by Will Ventures, with participation from Emerson Collective, Workshop, Lead VC, Salt VC, Accomplice, Moxxie, Ventures Together, Symphony, Felix Capital, Cosmic Venture Partners, Offscript, V1.VC and Morrison Seger.

Founded in 2023, Austin, Texas-based Throne launched its consumer product earlier this year. The device attaches to a standard toilet and uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to analyze bathroom habits, providing users with personalized insights into digestive health, hydration and urinary function over time.

The raise comes as the bathroom is emerging as a hotbed for connected health. Last year, Kohler entered the category with the launch of Kohler Health and its Dekoda toilet sensor, a device designed to monitor hydration, gut health and traces of blood in stool as part of the company’s vision of transforming the bathroom into a proactive wellness hub.

Like Kohler, Throne sees the bathroom as a source of continuous health data that has historically gone untapped. The company says future versions of its technology could help detect early signs of colorectal cancer — the second-deadliest cancer in the U.S. — and other serious gastrointestinal and urinary conditions.

“With the new funds, we’re building the infrastructure needed to take Throne to the next level,” the company’s founder and CEO Scott Hickle said, adding that the company’s long-term vision extends beyond wellness tracking to earlier detection of disease.

Earlier this month, Throne launched a beta version of its Gut Health AI Coach, allowing users to ask questions about their health data and receive personalized feedback. The new funding will support additional research and development, personnel growth and future product capabilities.

The company has also strengthened its leadership team with executives from across the connected health and wearable technology industries, including former Levels Health growth leader Ben Grynol, former Lumicell vice president of research and innovation David Strasfeld and gastrointestinal physician Dr. Karan Rajan as chief of science. Throne was co-founded by former Whoop chief technology officer John Capodilupo.
