Sauna Innovations Promise to Bring Health Benefits to More People
Wellness | Wall Street Journal| Mar. 9, 2021

Athletech’s Take:
The oldest known saunas were found in Finland and were pits dug into the ground along a slope. Since their creation saunas have been known to provide various benefits including mitigating risks of cardiovascular disease, reducing inflammation in the blood and temporarily relieving symptoms of the common cold. Though saunas are now commonplace in high-end gyms and spas, their space requirements and high costs (which can exceed $10,000) put them beyond the reach of many Americans. However new models with space-saving designs and emerging technology may allow the broader population to access the wonderful world of saunas.

How Virtual Fitness Classes are Providing Much-needed Community Right Now
Fitness | Today | Mar. 10, 2021

Athletech’s Take:
Fitness has been credited with fostering a strong community. We go to gyms, participate in yoga classes and take spin classes with others to strategically leverage human connections to build camaraderie, reach fitness goals and (for me) to get competitive. While “getting a virtual high-five or sharing a cup of coffee through a screen” may not be the same in a world of social distancing, it is definitely better than being alone and critical for our mental health.

Athletech’s Take:
Peloton continues to make headlines. In the past few weeks they announced expansion into Australia, celebrated the birth of instructor Robin Arzón’s baby girl and launched their newest feature, the ability to schedule classes with friends. After piloting the concept, the Peloton team is rolling out the functionality for all members. Leveraging the Peloton app, members can now also schedule rides and runs with friends. Pick a class, choose a date and time, and invite friends to join by sharing links with friends and family. Just one more tool helping Peloton foster community and another reason to jump on the Peloton craze.

Supercharge Your Fitness Routine With The Best VR Workout Apps And Games For Oculus Quest
Fitness | Forbes | Mar. 8 2021

Athletech’s Take:
Video games can no longer be associated with those who just sit on the couch and eat potato chips. Virtual reality has made gaming anything but a sedentary experience. While wearing VR headsets it is now possible to burn calories and get your heart pumping. With a recent release to the Oculus Quest, the headset has now transformed into a type of fitness tracker. The built-in app allows for users to track minutes spent moving and provides estimated calories burned across all your apps. Another incentive to get on the VR bandwagon!
