Best known for Pilates education and equipment, the Toronto-based Merrithew is expanding into adjacent movement modalities

Merrithew is expanding its footprint in the mindful movement space through the acquisition of the Gyrotonic organization, adding the creator of the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis movement methods to its portfolio.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

The Toronto-based Merrithew, best known for its Stott Pilates education system and equipment business, said the acquisition strengthens its position in movement-based fitness, wellness and rehabilitation while broadening the education and training offerings available to instructors and studios worldwide.

“This is an incredibly meaningful moment for Merrithew and the broader mindful movement community,” said Merrithew CEO Jim Heidenreich. “The addition of Gyrotonic expands Merrithew’s global reach, deepens our movement education portfolio and reinforces our long-term vision of changing lives through mindful movement.”

Founded by former dancer Juliu Horvath, the Gyrotonic organization oversees the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methods, which emphasize fluid, multi-directional movement patterns designed to improve mobility, strength, coordination and flexibility. The methods have developed a following among dancers, athletes, rehabilitation professionals and wellness practitioners since their introduction in the 1980s.

Gyrokinesis classes are typically performed using a stool and mat, while Gyrotonic training incorporates specialized equipment, including the brand’s signature pulley-based systems.

The acquisition comes as interest in Pilates and other mindful movement modalities continues to grow globally. Merrithew has sought to capitalize on that momentum through investments in education, equipment and studio operations. Last year, the company announced plans to relaunch its Toronto flagship location as a training and education hub anchored by the Stott Pilates Academy.

Merrithew said the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methods will continue to operate under their existing philosophies and education standards.
