The update brings Siri AI to the wrist, expands Workout Buddy and adds perimenopause and menopause support

This week, Apple announced watchOS 27, coming this fall, with a broad set of updates centered on AI, fitness coaching, women’s health and more contextual daily assistance. The biggest change is Siri AI, a new version of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence that brings more conversational, personalized and context-aware interactions to Apple Watch.

For Apple, the update signals a continued push to make the Watch an active health assistant. As wearables increasingly compete on coaching, health interpretation and AI-driven personalization, watchOS 27 positions Apple Watch as a device that both collects data and helps users act on it.

With the new Siri AI experience, users can start a conversation with Siri from the wrist, continue recent conversations through a Smart Stack suggestion and access a dedicated Siri app that brings conversations together in one place. Apple says the assistant uses personal context understanding and broad world knowledge, making it better suited for quick questions, task completion and follow-up interactions while users are moving throughout their day.

Fitness is also a major part of the update. Workout Buddy, Apple’s AI-powered workout coaching feature, is being expanded with Spanish-language support and the ability to work on Apple Watch even when the user does not have an iPhone nearby. The feature will also incorporate more fitness data when delivering motivational insights, making the experience more personalized.

Apple is also expanding the Watch’s role in women’s health. With watchOS 27, the Health app will support perimenopause and menopause in Cycle Tracking, including notifications about cycle deviations that are inclusive of perimenopause. Apple Fitness+ is also introducing Strong Through Menopause, a three-week progressive program with weekly Yoga and Strength workouts designed to help users build strength, improve balance and mobility and reduce stress. A new Time to Walk episode featuring actor Busy Philipps also includes her experience with perimenopause.

The update also brings more refinements across fitness and daily use. New machine learning algorithms will make distance calculations during treadmill running and walking workouts more accurate. watchOS 27 also includes faster media playback on Apple Watch, faster workout starts in the Workout app, synced step count in the Health and Fitness apps and more accurate route maps after workouts.
