As wellness operators move from ambiance to evidence, Shiftwave is making autonomic regulation the foundation of the modern longevity stack

For most of the past decade, “wellness” was an aesthetic. It was eucalyptus towels, beautifully designed lounges and perfectly lit recovery rooms. The category grew into a $6.8 trillion global market on that experience economy.

Then, things changed. The conversation moved to longevity, and consumers stopped paying for vibes. They started demanding results.

McKinsey’s Future of Wellness survey in 2024 found that nearly 70% of U.S. and U.K. consumers purchased more longevity-supporting products in the past year than the year before, with more than 60% rating those purchases as “very” or “extremely” important. Rachel MacPherson captured the shift as well in The “Unshittification” of Wellness: 2025-2026 Trends Report, where she stated that the industry is “pivoting from looking good to functioning well,” with audiences “rejecting polished lifestyle ads in favor of unfiltered truth, biological proof and expert-led education.” The Global Wellness Institute’s April 2026 Aging Well report agreed, stating that wellness brands are “reframing longevity as a marker of capability and resilience rather than aesthetics.”

Ankit Khanna put it even blunter, calling this not a “glow up era,” but an “endurance” one. The question consumers are asking has shifted from “How do I look?” to “How long can I keep going like this?”

Jim Donnelly, co-founder of Humanaut Health, one of the country’s premium longevity clinics, doesn’t soften the challenge for operators.

The argument is simple: if a clinic or wellness center isn’t addressing why its members can’t recover, sleep or respond to treatment the way they should, it isn’t yet doing longevity. The market is no longer about who has the prettiest space. It’s about who has the evidence.

The Epidemic Nobody Is Naming

The longevity conversation largely centers around people struggling to get the results they want, not because the protocols don’t work, but because the foundation isn’t there.

The symptoms are everywhere. Eagle Hill Consulting reported that more than half of U.S. workers reported active burnout in 2025. The CDC reported in 2024 that roughly one in three adults don’t get enough sleep. Data from the 2022 National Health Interview Survey showed one in five adults age 18 and older experienced anxiety or depression symptoms. These are not three separate problems. They are three symptoms of one root cause: a chronically dysregulated autonomic nervous system (ANS).

The ANS governs fight-or-flight and rest-and-recover, is measured by heart rate variability (HRV) and determines whether the body is in a state to heal or under stress. Sleep, mood, focus, immunity, hormonal balance, metabolic health and even training and supplementation all depend on it.

ANS dysregulation touches everyone as well. Athletes, executives, parents, surgeons and soldiers can all carry it. It doesn’t discriminate by income, fitness level or the quality of one’s recovery room. It’s an epidemic, and the longevity industry has largely been building on top of it, unaddressed.

Relief First. Capacity Next.

When the body is stuck in sympathetic dominance long enough, people forget what the alternative feels like. They normalize the tight jaw, shallow breath, racing thoughts and feeling wired-but-tired flatness, assuming that’s just adulthood, aging or the cost of ambition.

The moment the ANS shifts back, when the body recognizes it’s safe, the experience isn’t sedation or euphoria. It’s something quieter and more profound: relief. Shoulders drop. Breath deepens. Mental noise quiets. The body remembers what its baseline is supposed to feel like.

That immediacy is what brings people back. It is only the entry point. A healthy ANS isn’t one that stays calm — it moves fluidly between sympathetic and parasympathetic states, ramping up under demand and dropping back into recovery when the demand passes. Chronic dysregulation is what happens when the body loses that ability.

Each session with Shiftwave, one of the world’s most advanced nervous system regulation devices, moves the body through that deliberate cycle, and the more the body practices, the more capable it becomes of making the shift independently.

Shiftwave is like strength training for the nervous system. Relief is what you feel today. Capacity is what gets built over time.

The Foundation Everyone Has Been Working Around

This regulation is the part of the longevity conversation that’s been missing, and the industry itself is beginning to see it. Humanaut Health and PUR-FORM recently placed autonomic regulation at the center of the year’s longevity conversation.

“Nervous system regulation will become a central focus in longevity medicine, recognized as a key driver of long-term health,” the brands reported. “2026 will bring a greater emphasis on tools and therapies that support autonomic stability, from breathwork and somatic practices to neuromodulation technologies.”

When the ANS is regulated, the downstream effects are exactly what every serious longevity protocol is trying to deliver. Sleep deepens, HRV rises, inflammation drops and cortisol patterns normalize. Digestion, immune function, hormone production, glucose regulation and post-exercise recovery all function the way they were designed to. Cognitive clarity also returns while emotional regulation strengthens.

None of these outcomes are claims unique to Shiftwave. They are the well-documented, downstream effects of restoring autonomic balance. What Shiftwave provides is a reliable, repeatable way to get there.

Built in a Lab, Not a Design Studio

Shiftwave didn’t start with a moodboard or a brand book. It asked itself what’s the highest-leverage point of intervention for long-term health, and came to understand ANS regulation as the answer. Rather than designing a product to fit a category, the team spent years engineering technology capable of moving it reliably, measurably and quickly.

Shiftwave is purposely engineered to send pressure waves through the body with enough mechanical force to communicate directly with the ANS through tissue and fascia. It’s a meaningful distinction from vibroacoustic technology, which doesn’t deliver the force required to cut through the noise. Shiftwave delivers physical motion as well, producing different physiological outcomes that matter particularly in clinical settings.

This results in a measurable shift from sympathetic dominance to parasympathetic activation in a single session that takes as little as 10 minutes.

Where It Shows Up

If a technology is real, the most credible evidence isn’t in a press release. It’s in the settings where there’s no time, no budget and no room for a placebo.

  • Professional Sports: Every major North American professional sports league, including the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and MLS, leverages Shiftwave. The brand also cites increasing adoption in pro sports internationally. NFL quarterback JJ McCarthy is a multi-year user as well.
  • Frontline Trauma Care: Ukrainian military and trauma recovery programs, operating with limited resources and a patient population carrying an acute and chronic nervous system load that few in modern life can imagine, have continued expanding their Shiftwave deployment. It produces results other interventions don’t.
  • Longevity Medicine: Humanaut Health, built explicitly around the principle that every modality must be backed by real data, includes Shiftwave in its protocol.
  • Canyon Ranch: Shiftwave was selected for the inaugural Canyon Ranch Wellness Gold List — one of only five products chosen in the mental, emotional and spiritual well-being category. The list drew on 148 Canyon Ranch clinicians and 42 outside MDs, PhDs and researchers to evaluate products for efficacy, design and real-world results.

Pro locker rooms, Ukrainian trauma programs, a premium longevity clinic and one of the world’s most rigorous wellness destinations don’t agree on much. They are agreeing on this.

What This Means for Operators

The message to operators is direct: the next wave of differentiation isn’t another modality on the menu. It is addressing the foundation every other modality has been working around.

The shift is structural, not cyclical. Wearables, continuous glucose monitors, HRV tracking and recovery apps have made wellness measurable at the consumer level, and consumers are increasingly skeptical of soft promises.

Operators whose protocols can address that message, this shift, will define the next era, while those that can’t will cede ground.

The brands already leading, Canyon Ranch and Humanaut among them, are betting that ANS regulation is where real results begin. Donnelly often argues that longevity medicine must address the underlying reasons people struggle to recover sleep, and respond to treatment, not simply treat symptoms.

Operators who recognize that shift early will be the ones still relevant five years from now.
