As muscle health becomes a central indicator of healthspan, fitness facilities are adopting more sophisticated ways to measure, track and support member progress.

One of the most significant shifts happening in fitness today is the growing recognition of muscle health as a key driver of healthspan.

As conversations around longevity, metabolic health, recovery and active aging continue to gain momentum, consumers are developing a more sophisticated understanding of what drives overall health. Muscle, once viewed primarily through a performance lens, is now being recognized for its role in everything from mobility and independence to glucose regulation and overall health outcomes. 

“We are seeing a major shift away from fitness being viewed purely through an aesthetic lens and toward fitness as a long-term health strategy,” says Duane Jones, general manager and executive vice president at seca. “Consumers are focused on extending healthspan, improving quality of life, maintaining independence as they age and supporting metabolic health, and muscle is a foundational component of all four.”

That evolution is changing expectations throughout the industry. Members want more personalized insights. Coaches need better tools to guide programming. Operators are searching for ways to demonstrate progress beyond the scale. The result is a growing focus on body composition and the technologies that make it measurable.

A New Understanding of Progress

The traditional fitness model often treated weight loss as the primary indicator of success. Today, fitness professionals are looking beyond the scale to gain a more complete picture of health, performance and long-term outcomes.

“Weight loss and BMI only tell a very small part of the story,” Jones says. Two people can have the exact same BMI while having completely different levels of muscle mass, visceral fat, and metabolic health risk.”

As research continues to connect skeletal muscle to mobility, strength, recovery, glucose regulation and healthy aging, muscle health is becoming a far more meaningful measure of progress.

That shift carries significant implications for fitness operators.

Rather than centering conversations around weight loss alone, coaches can focus on preserving muscle, improving functional health, reducing visceral fat and supporting long-term wellness goals. Members gain a clearer picture of their progress, even during periods when the scale itself changes very little.

“Consumers are beginning to understand that losing weight at the expense of muscle can actually be counterproductive long term,” Jones says.

As body composition becomes a larger part of the fitness experience, the accuracy of those measurements becomes critical.

This is where seca has invested heavily in scientific validation.

For skeletal muscle measurement, the company validated its technology against whole-body MRI, which is widely regarded as the gold standard for directly measuring skeletal muscle mass.

For Jones, that distinction is important.

“Historically, many technologies in the fitness space have focused on measuring lean soft tissue, which includes water, organs, connective tissue and other non-fat components,” he says. “Lean soft tissue is not the same as skeletal muscle mass.”

The same philosophy guided seca’s approach to measuring fat mass. The company validated its fat mass measurements against the four-compartment (4C) model, one of the most respected body composition reference methods available. The 4C model combines body volume, total body water, bone mineral content and body weight to provide a highly accurate assessment of fat mass and fat-free mass.

Together, these validation standards help ensure that the information being used to guide training, nutrition and recovery decisions is grounded in clinically recognized reference methods rather than estimation.

The growing demand for muscle health insights reflects another shift occurring throughout fitness: consumers have become accustomed to tracking data.

“The explosion of wearable technology like Whoop, Oura Ring, and Apple Watch has created a consumer that is far more data-driven and health conscious than ever before,” Jones says.

Body composition is becoming part of that same evolution, and for operators, that presents a clear business case. 

“When members receive personalized insights and can clearly see progress tied to their goals, they are more likely to stay committed to their programs,” he says. “It creates a more consultative and coaching-driven relationship versus a transactional gym membership.”

It also opens opportunities for premium services such as personal training, transformation programs, metabolic health coaching, recovery programs, and recurring assessment packages.

From a retention standpoint, body composition tracking creates additional touchpoints between the facility and the member. Regular scans and progress reviews help reinforce accountability and provide measurable proof of value.

“Ultimately, operators that can deliver data-driven health insights are moving beyond simply providing equipment access and toward delivering a more complete wellness experience,” says Jones.

Where Fitness and Healthcare Converge

The growing emphasis on muscle health also reflects a larger convergence between fitness and healthcare.

“Muscle health sits at the center of many of the biggest conversations happening in healthcare and wellness today,” Jones says.

Researchers continue to explore connections between skeletal muscle and obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, injury prevention, mobility and recovery. In active aging populations, maintaining muscle plays a direct role in preserving independence and quality of life.

That creates an opportunity for fitness facilities to play a broader role in preventative health.

Facilities that can measure meaningful health indicators, educate members and track outcomes are positioning themselves as partners in long-term wellness rather than simply places to exercise.

For Jones, the opportunity ahead extends beyond technology itself.

“The opportunity for the industry now is education,” he says. “Fitness operators, healthcare providers and technology companies all have an important role to play in helping consumers understand why muscle health matters and how it impacts long-term outcomes.”

Looking ahead, Jones believes advanced body composition tracking will become as common as heart-rate monitoring and wearable technology. The key will be ensuring that those insights are accurate, actionable and integrated into the member experience in ways that support coaching, motivation and long-term engagement.

“The facilities and brands that can successfully educate consumers while providing measurable insights will be extremely well-positioned moving forward,” he says.
