Women’s supplements have become far more personalized in recent years, with consumers increasingly looking for targeted support for everything from gut health and sleep to hormone balance, cognition, fertility and hair growth. At the same time, the category has expanded well beyond traditional capsules, with greens powders, mushroom gummies, synbiotics and drinkable wellness formulas reshaping how supplements fit into everyday routines for women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond.

The Best Supplements for Women: What to Look for

To find out the best supplements women should consider, we sat down with functional dietician Olivia Yorizzo, MS, RDN, CDN, for more insight on popular products like creatine and what can help support menopause, PCOS and other health concerns.

“Creatine is one supplement I wish more women were familiar with and open to trying,” Yorizzo tells Athletech News. “A lot of people still associate it with ‘gym-bro’ bulk season, but it’s actually one of the most well-researched, women-friendly supplements out there. It supports strength, energy, muscle health and even brain health, with research suggesting it may support mood and mental energy.”

She also points out that certain supplements can help women going through perimenopause, which “can feel like a hormonal rollercoaster, emotionally, physically and metabolically, and no two women experience it the same way. As a women’s functional dietitian, I often see nutrients like magnesium glycinate for sleep and nervous system support, L-theanine for stress resilience, B vitamins for overall energy, and inositol and berberine for metabolic and blood sugar balance. Vitamin D, calcium, creatine and collagen also tend to come up when we think about long-term bone and muscle support.”

For women with PCOS (now referred to as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, or PMOS), “inositol is one of those nutrients I keep coming back to in PCOS support for women, and for good reason,” she adds. “Research on myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol shows improvements in insulin sensitivity, androgen balance, ovulation and metabolic markers like triglycerides and blood pressure. From a functional nutrition perspective, I like it because it supports insulin signaling and hormone communication in a way that feels both evidence-based and also aligned with root-cause health.”

And now that functional mushrooms have long been mainstream, Yorizzo notes that it’s important to try different brands and formulas to see which works best for you.

“Mushroom supplements often positioned to support areas like energy, focus, stress resilience or overall wellbeing. They can come in powders, capsules, gummies or blends, depending on the brand and use case. Because formulas vary widely, women should look closely at the specific mushroom types, dosing and testing behind a product rather than assuming all mushroom supplements work the same way,” she says.

From emerging wellness brands to established names like Hum, Gruns, AG1 and Nutrafol, today’s supplement market offers a growing range of products designed to support specific health goals and life stages.
