It’s news that could leave bottled water rivals green with envy.

Chlorophyll Water, found at leading fitness and wellness destinations such as Alo Yoga, Barry’s, Anatomy, Pure Barre and Equinox Hotels, has earned the “Clean Label Project Certification” for the third year in a row, reinforcing its position as one of the cleanest bottled waters on the market.

The New York-based brand was the first bottled water in the United States to receive the certification, which tests for more than 90 environmental and industrial contaminants, including heavy metals, plasticizers and pesticide residues. Granted by the nonprofit Clean Label Project, the standard is based on independent lab testing.

The recognition comes as consumers, particularly Gen Z, are becoming more selective about what they eat and drink, seeking options that are not only marketed as healthy but also verified as clean and free from unwanted additives.

Chlorophyll’s offline buzz is matched by its virality on social media, racking up TikTok views and fueling viral “glow-up” videos. Proponents tout benefits ranging from reduced inflammation, clearer skin and improved energy, with some research suggesting that chlorophyll helps neutralize free radicals, supports detoxification enzymes and aids digestion.

“In my opinion, Clean Label Project Certification is the most important certification a brand can earn — because it’s not about hype or marketing, it’s about what’s actually in your product,” Chlorophyll Water founder Matt Levine said. “Clean Label Project provides third-party, lab-tested proof independently tested for over 90 environmental toxins, plasticizers and pesticide residues. It’s the gold standard for brands that truly stand behind their product.”

Levine, who previously owned veggie- and organic-focused restaurants in New York City, said the idea for Chlorophyll Water came from a personal search for an all-natural energy boost during long hours in the restaurant industry.

After shifting to a plant-based diet, he began adding liquid chlorophyll to his morning water and noticed improvements in his energy and overall well-being. Convinced of its benefits, he set out to create the first shelf-stable bottled water infused with chlorophyll, ultra-purified through triple filtration and UV treatment and fortified with vitamins A, B12, C and D.

But what truly sets Chlorophyll Water apart may be what’s missing. Testing by Ellipse Analytics, an ISO-accredited chemistry lab, confirmed non-detect levels of BPA, BPS, lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury.

“Being the first bottled water in the U.S. to receive this certification speaks volumes about Chlorophyll Water’s commitment to ingredient quality and purification,” Clean Label Project executive director and food safety systems engineer Jaclyn Bowen said.

In keeping with its clean-label positioning, the brand also emphasizes sustainability. Bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic with CleanFlake label technology to improve recyclability, and through a partnership with rePurpose Global, each sale funds the recovery of one ocean-bound plastic bottle.

While it’s become a hydrating fixture at leading gyms and studios, Chlorophyll Water is also available nationwide at Erewhon, Sprouts, Wegmans, Meijer, Bristol Farms and Earth Fare, along with other grocery and wellness retailers.
