Superpower Biomarker Blood Test Review

The service tests more than 100 biomarkers to check for early signs of over 1,000 health conditions – see whether it’s worth $199

Biomarker blood tests are booming right now. While it’s nothing new for anyone with an annual checkup routine or who has gotten screened for heart issues and other health concerns, telehealth companies are simplifying the bloodwork process with convenient online booking and seamless reports that deliver data with as much or as little medical jargon as preferred.

Superpower is among the companies that offer blood testing, and the brand says its labs “go five times deeper than regular bloodwork, testing 100+ biomarkers for early signs of 1,000+ conditions.” Founded in 2023, the company works with more than 3,000 blood testing labs nationwide (including Quest Diagnostics) and offers in-home services for an extra fee. While it’s not covered by insurance, Superpower is HSA- and FSA-eligible.

Athletech News recently tried out Superpower’s membership, which starts at $199 and includes a blood draw, a full report with 17 health scores, a personalized action plan based on the test results and unlimited access to an AI-powered concierge. (It costs $399 for those in New York and New Jersey.)

Members can get other tests such as the Advanced Blood Panel (which takes up to 15 days to process); Gut Microbiome Analysis ($239) that offers insights on low energy, brain fog and food intolerances; Environmental Toxins ($299) for measuring plastics, pesticides and others that may affect hormone changes and allergies, among other issues; and Mycotoxins ($289) for mold exposure.

For this review, it’s important to know the test subject to understand the test results. I consider myself a generally healthy person: I try to eat all my recommended greens and fruits, I get a good amount of regular movement and exercise, and I try to stay on top of any medical issues. (However, my Sleep Score is a sore subject.) I don’t have a biohacker-level obsession with tracking macros or gulping down every superfood and adaptogen supplement, but I do pay attention when my Apple Watch reminds me to close my Rings for the day. All of this to say that regardless of diet or activity level, I know I’m not the only person who’s interested in learning more about their health with a Superpower test.

Having recently gotten my pre-diabetes under control, I was already in tune with the state of my overall health. In my Superpower results, I was particularly interested in finding out my Biological Age and Pace of Aging scores – metrics that aren’t included with my usual bloodwork. Data privacy was also a concern, and Superpower notes that it follows HIPAA guidelines to keep patient information secure. (Unless, of course, that patient is a journalist willingly sharing their results online.) The company allows users to download their full report and delete their data from the site, if they choose.

Superpower Blood Test Review: The Bottom Line

While it’s not a substitute for your primary care physician, Superpower is a great entry way into gaining deeper insights into your health.

Superpower vs. Function: Price Comparison

At $199 for a one-year membership ($399 for members in New York and New Jersey), Superpower is less expensive than Function, which recently lowered its price to $365 but includes tests for more than 160 biomarkers.

Superpower Blood Test Review: Getting Started

I opted for the standard blood panel, and Superpower lets you add other diagnostic tests during the signup process. I didn’t have unexplained issues with health concerns such as allergies and hormones, so I figured the basic test would suffice. I’m based in Los Angeles, and finding an appointment that fit into my schedule was easy and seamless with Superpower’s online booking system.

Superpower Review: Preparing For Your Blood Draw

Blood draws require fasting for at least 10 hours, so I booked a morning appointment. Superpower will send you helpful email reminders 48, 12 and 1 hours before your appointment to encourage you to drink plenty of water; avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and caffeine (which can skew your results); and eat a light snack, if needed. Superpower also suggests pausing biotin supplements such as B-complex, hair/skin/nail vitamins and multivitamins, which may contain high doses that might affect your blood.

I waited about a week after my blood draw to receive my data. Results were organized by an overall Superpower Score out of a potential of 100, Key Insights, a Biological Age and a color-coded Summary and Biomarkers breakdown denoted in green for optimal, yellow for normal and pink for out of range. You’ll also see a “Digital Twin” where all of your health data will be reflected.

Your data will be available as a downloadable PDF, which comes in handy when you want to share your results with your doctor or another medical professional.

Superpower will also give you a protocol of recommended products from trusted brands based on your health priorities, all of which you can buy through them, of course. (Mine included supplements from Thorne, Quicksilver Scientific and Pure Encapsulations.) Members get 25% off when they order through Superpower, which certainly makes it easy to follow their wellness orders. The company says its health concierge team will also “measure how your product stack improves our health markers.”

Superpower Blood Test Report: What We Liked

If you’re a data devotee like me, you’ll enjoy doing a deep dive into your Superpower report. The platform hits the sweet spot with biomarker details and actionable advice given, and I especially liked that links to all sources are shared. Each health category is broken down into biomarkers, and each is clickable to show your range level (low, normal or high), the optimal range and an explanation of what it is and why it’s important.

Superpower also explains why being in the low range of certain markers isn’t necessarily cause for concern when considered with your other data. For instance, my report shows I’m in the low end of the optimal range for Free Thyroxine Index (FTI), but I am not at risk for hyperthyroidism because my other thyroid hormones are within range. I was given “gentle, root-cause-aligned ways” to help improve my FTI, such as getting higher quality sleep, taking vitamin D, reducing stress and increasing intake of certain nutrients (such as iodine, selenium and zinc).

All of my key health information was literally at my fingertips, and the online report made it easy to see what needed attention and exactly how to address those issues with lifestyle or nutrition changes or supplements.

Superpower also suggests supplements to help reach your health goals. It had been a while since I revisited the cocktail of supplements I’d been taking for years, and my Superpower report actually helped me streamline my routine. I cut out the majority of the unnecessary supplements I was previously taking and added FiberMend and Super EPA from Thorne, berberine and vitamin D to my routine. The company recommends taking another test ($179) in six months to track the effects of any changes you’ve made.

While not a high-tech swap for an actual doctor, I also enjoyed asking Superpower’s AI follow-up questions. Choosing the pre-generated “Should I change anything now?” gave me a reassuring answer. When I asked, “should I take more creatine?”, it pointed out that my creatine levels were fine for my body size, and I wouldn’t need more than 3g per day to boost my workouts or mood. It also reminded me that I could text Superpower’s dedicated number if I wanted a clinician’s feedback on my exact supplement stack.

Superpower Blood Test Review: Final Verdict

Overall, Superpower is a great way to complement your existing health plan with a primary care physician. In my case, I was able to save myself an extra needle prick by sharing my Superpower results with my doctor after getting diagnosed with pre-diabetes and showing that I got my blood glucose under control.

Results will vary from person to person, and so will the data that you value most. As someone who feels like there’s always room for improvement in the health department, my report reassured me that I’m on the right path. In my experience, Superpower truly empowered me to deepen my understanding of my health.
