The equipment brand can now prescribe workouts and meet demands at a more refined level than ever

As fitness consumers continue to look inward to better understand their bodies and improve performance, Matrix Fitness, a top commercial fitness equipment provider, is giving them a more powerful lens to peer through.

In the coming months, the brand will launch PACE, the Personalized Adaptive Coaching Experience, in partnership with seca, a global leader in medical-grade measuring and body composition analytical solutions.

By weaving PACE into the console experience on its strength and cardio equipment, Matrix will tap into an ocean of data, empowering gyms to deliver more customized and adaptive fitness experiences in the process.

“We know how their bodies are made up and the types of exercises that are available to them in the facility,” said Matthew McConley, a senior digital product manager at Matrix. “We know what their goals are and the deadlines they want to achieve them by. We know all this stuff about consumers, so why wouldn’t we use the new technologies available to actually keep people engaged and help them achieve their goals?”

Personalization Demand

Matrix didn’t partner with seca just to create a shiny new innovation. Personalization in fitness has evolved from a demand to something that’s now anticipated.

“On your phone, all of your experiences facilitate personalization,” McConley said. “Your social media, that’s curated just for you. If you get on the internet and search for something on Google, you’ll have ads promoted for you. Whether it’s at the doctor, the grocery store or on Amazon, people expect personalized experiences when they work with software.”

Matrix and seca responded to deliver that in the gym with PACE. Members begin with a quick measurement on a seca body composition device to establish baseline readings. Then, they put their goals into a Matrix console. After that, the brand’s AI-driven programming takes the information and leverages it to develop personalized workout regimens, later guiding members through them with on-screen visuals.

Advantages of Personalization

A directionless trip to the gym isn’t good for anyone. If a member hops on a machine, hits the “go” button and manually adjusts settings, they may not see the progress they’re hoping for. That base workout isn’t tailored to their leaping off point or goals. Then, as the sessions stack without any noticeable improvement, that member will begin to question their membership investment.

“They’re paying for the privilege of getting absolutely nowhere,” McConley said. “That hampers the lifetime value of memberships and creates a churn situation where you’re relinquishing business to competitors or to nobody at all.”

With PACE’s personalized workout plans, Matrix creates that clear path to advancement, and as members notice their progression, they’ll feel encouraged to continue pushing forward. In some cases, they’ll encourage others to purchase memberships as well.

“Better outcomes drive better retention,” McConley said. “The word’s gonna get out that people who go to your gym are actually seeing results, whether they’ve got a trainer or not.”

seca’s analysis also accounts for the abundance of factors standard workout programs overlook, creating more detailed and adaptable plans that acknowledge every aspect of someone’s health profile.

“All kinds of different things are going on in terms of a person’s broader health,” McConley said. “Trying to help improve those outcomes, that’s the next frontier for our industry. Solutions like PACE have a chance to  be at the forefront of delivering recommendations that are tailored to these individuals and the battles that they’re facing.”

Interior Differences

While a handful of other innovations on the market also promise personalized workout plans via body composition scans, PACE is the only one utilizing seca equipment, rated and certified for medical use rather than just fitness.

“We are now the only ones in the industry that can say the body composition analysis data that flows into our machine learning models, into PACE, is medical-grade data,” McConley said. “It’s certified for hospitals or doctors’ offices and is 97% as accurate as an MRI, which is the gold standard.”

That high-quality data not only benefits current users with sharper analytics, but also enhances outcomes for those in the future. AI systems are shaped by their foundational inputs, and by equipping PACE with “gold standard” data from the start, Matrix and seca are giving the program the optimal fuel to continue learning and perform well into the future.

“If we’re pumping in medical-grade body composition data that’s as accurate as any on the planet, we can rest assured that our machine learning model is getting the best possible insight,” McConley said. “Having that level of quality of data flowing in is absolutely a differentiator in our world.”

Exterior Differences

The PACE interface on Matrix’s connected cardio and strength equipment has a user-friendly design and self-survey to gather supplemental data beyond the scan, making workout programming more approachable and easy to understand for novice exercisers.

“All you have to do is tap a few buttons,” McConley said. “Choose the goal, the date, the number of sessions per week, and how long you do each session. After you’ve done your scan, that’s all you have to do.”

Unlike other popular technology solutions, PACE doesn’t ask users to input information they’re not sure about like their ideal strength and cardio percentage split. Instead the programming learns from workout performance metrics taken for a more seamless user experience. All of this allows beginner exercisers to get started with their customized training program on their very first visit to the facility instead of a lengthy onboarding process.

PACE is currently undergoing pilot testing at select facilities and will be available globally later this year.
