Johnson Health Tech Trading Recalls BowFlex Dumbbells

The recall affects approximately 3.8 million BowFlex 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells
Johnson Health Tech Trading is issuing a voluntary recall of its BowFlex 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells, citing safety concerns identified in collaboration with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall stems from a defect that can cause the weight plates to dislodge from the handle during use and impacts roughly 3.8 million units.
BowFlex, which rebranded from Nautilus in 2023, filed for bankruptcy last year before being acquired by Johnson Health Tech for $37.5 million.
Johnson Health Tech Trading said it is taking a proactive stance in reaching all owners of the affected products, regardless of whether the dumbbells were purchased from the now-defunct Nautilus or Johnson Health Tech Trading. The dumbbells were also sold at Johnson Fitness & Wellness, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Best Buy locations nationwide, as well as online at Bowflex.com and Amazon.
Consumers can check this page for affected models and serial numbers. If impacted, they are advised to immediately stop using the recalled BowFlex adjustable dumbbells. According to the CPSC, Johnson Health Tech Trading has received 12 reports of the plates dislodging during use with no injuries for units it sold. Nautilus received 337 reports of the plates dislodging during use for units it sold, including 111 resulting in injuries such as concussions, abrasions, broken toes or contusions.
“We stand behind the integrity of our products and remain committed to supporting our customers throughout their fitness journey,” Johnson Health Tech Trading said in a statement. “A proactive and broad initiation of this voluntary recall is consistent with our fundamental mission to serve consumers with high-quality and durable fitness equipment.”
Johnson Health Tech Trading noted that updated versions of the 552 and 1090 models – Results Series 552 SelectTech Dumbbells and the Results Series 1090 SelectTech Dumbbells – have been developed to comply with its safety standards.
The new dumbbells will be a replacement option and will be available soon, according to the company. Customers who purchased the equipment from Nautilus will be eligible to apply a prorated refund voucher toward the purchase of the new dumbbells when available. Consumers will be sent a pre-paid shipping label to return the handle and base for each returned dumbbell.
