ISSA Secures Special Insurance Pricing for Personal Trainers

ISSA has partnered with Allied Professionals Insurance (API) to offer a $50 discount off standard liability insurance rates for one-year coverage

Jenny Liebl knows all too well how fragile the training room experience can be. Liebl, senior content developer at the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) and a certified elite personal trainer, has seen her share of close calls.

“I’ve worked at various gyms and I’ve witnessed incidents on the floor, such as people falling off treadmills,” Liebl says. “These falls often happen when clients are distracted, talking to someone beside them, or moving too quickly. Some of my athletes have tripped and fallen off plyo boxes, which is a fear for many.”

Luckily, no one was seriously injured, Liebl recounts, but she knows how lucky she and others are.

“I’ve heard stories of people breaking resistance tubing, or a carabiner or metal piece flying off a cable machine, narrowly missing someone’s head,” Liebl states. “Many things can go wrong. I compare these incidents to unexpected events like car accidents. We don’t expect them; they’re accidents for a reason. While we can’t always anticipate or prepare for these events, we strive to ensure the gym environment remains as safe as possible.”

The Perks of a Policy

Many personal trainers, whether they’re independent contractors or they work for a chain, tend to underestimate the need for liability insurance, even if financial repercussions loom large. To help make it easier for fitness professionals to get the coverage they need, ISSA has partnered with Allied Professionals Insurance (API) to offer a $50 discount off standard liability insurance rates for their initial one-year coverage.

This policy, with a $1-million liability coverage per incident for one year, aims to fortify trainers against the potential fallout of unforeseen incidents. In an industry where the balance between physical exertion and safety can sometimes teeter, such protection becomes paramount.

“We work to offer not only the highest quality training but also holistic programs and support to those seeking careers in the fitness industry,” said Craig Bradley, chief growth officer at ISSA. “Our partnership with API enhances our already robust toolbox of support we offer our students.”

Since 1986, API has been providing coverage for over 150,000 health and wellness professionals nationwide. API carries an A- Excellent rating from AM Best. No one expects a problem, but if something happens, API has the expertise to defend the insured, including their reputation, and their livelihood.

“I am so pleased to extend our services to ISSA’s esteemed graduates,” said Philip Stump, API President. “This partnership is a win-win for all. It allows ISSA fitness professionals to focus on giving their clients the very best training, while we focus on keeping them protected and safe.”

Liebl notes one key distinction about API is that the company understands the nuances and possible dangers associated with personal training, as opposed to an insurance company that only provides general business coverage. She also mentions common misconceptions some personal trainers have, such as presuming they automatically have coverage because they work for someone else or believing a client would never sue because they’re friendly.

“It might seem that friends wouldn’t sue friends, but you’d be surprised,” Liebl says. “If your friend discusses an incident with their significant other or their mom, they might be advised to sue. There might be instances when your friend has no intention of suing you, but external pressures might convince them otherwise.”

ISSA-certified trainers, both new and seasoned, can now enroll for this discounted insurance through the association’s official website.
