Ohana Growth Partners Acquires More Planet Fitness Gyms

The deal comes as multiple Planet Fitness franchisees eye expansion moves, likely buoyed by the HVLP gym giant’s wins with Gen Z
Planet Fitness franchisee Ohana Growth Partners has acquired 10 clubs in Michigan from JP Fitness and picked up a location in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, that is expected to open by the end of the year.
“We are in great hands turning these clubs over to Ohana Growth Partners,” JP Fitness owner Julian Monterosso said. “We couldn’t ask for a better owner-operator team for this transaction.”
The Michigan locations include Alpine Township, Byron Center, Grand Haven, Grand Rapids, Greenville, two in Holland, two in Muskegon and Plainfield Township.
With the deal, the Maryland-based group now owns and operates 94 Planet Fitness clubs across Maryland, Washington, D.C., Tennessee, Florida, Washington state, California and Michigan. The company expects to open six additional locations by year’s end.
“Ohana has always been ambitious about growth, thoroughly assessing opportunities to expand in our existing markets and enter new markets to grow the brand, create access to fitness and operate clubs that help change people’s lives,” OGP president Justin Drummond said. “This acquisition is aligned with our strategic growth goals, and we look forward to joining the Michigan and Wisconsin communities.”
Planet Fitness Franchisees Race To Expand
Other Planet Fitness franchisees are also stepping up expansion. Earlier this month, Excel Fitness, backed by Olympus Partners, put out a call for acquisitions across nine states.
The group is seeking clubs that meet specific criteria: footprints between 15,000 and 30,000 square feet in suburban or secondary growth markets, strong visibility and signage and placement in anchored retail centers with more than 100 feet of frontage and ample parking.
At the same time, the high-value, low-price (HVLP) gym giant set a record this summer with nearly 3.8 million teens signing up for its High School Summer Pass program, which gave high schoolers free access across 2,700 Planet Fitness clubs. The initiative, now in its largest year yet, highlights how Gen Z (and soon Gen Alpha) are quickly becoming the core of the brand’s growth story.
