Activewear Brand Ten Thousand To Host 10K Race in NYC—With a Grueling Twist
The fitness apparel brand is dipping into the performance event space with an unsanctioned race that requires athletes to complete 250 burpees during a 6.2-mile race in Manhattan.
As if running couldn’t test the body any more, fitness apparel and gear brand Ten Thousand is hosting a new kind of race for athletes in New York City looking for a tough challenge. The Ten Thousand 10K, taking place on Friday, October 10, will consist of 50 athletes running an unsanctioned street race covering 6.2 miles in Manhattan — all while completing 250 burpees along the way.
Runners will race 25 laps around a block located in the Meatpacking District, completing 10 burpees per lap. To enter, each participant must submit a $100-buy-in, adding up to a $5,000 prize for the top finisher.
Ten Thousand isn’t alone in modeling the Hyrox trend of brands looking to launch their own grueling fitness events that test athletes’ limits. The U.K.-based fashion brand Represent, using its performance athleticwear line 247, hosted its first fitness event in July. The competition featured 100 participants in teams of five in a 12-hour multi-stage event, completing one challenge involving a five-kilometer run and an optional SkiErg workout at the top of each hour. The team with the most points won a £5,000 cash prize and 247 kits of their choice.
Ten Thousand’s event is the brand’s effort to “crown the toughest athlete in NYC.” The race was first announced in early September, after which fifty athletes were selected from a pool of applicants, including top Hyrox athletes Dylan Scott and Jack Driscoll.
The event will start at 6:00 p.m. at the 14th Street Park in Manhattan. Spectators will receive a special edition 10/10 Interval T-Shirt, which will be available for purchase starting October 10th.
